At Crump's property back in Kencape, Jake was still out back teaching Lindsay how to use a firearm. She picked up the concepts quickly, and Jake was impressed by the way she handled the Beretta. Her aim was not exactly precise, but she was capable of hitting something from a reasonable distance.

"You're doing really well!" Jake told Lindsey.

She smiled and aimed the pistol at the fake deer about 80 feet away, but fired and missed.

"You were distracting me!" Lindsey exclaimed in sarcasm.

"Here, let me help you out some more," Jake insisted as he reached for the pistol.

Lindsey sighed and gave it back to him, and he began to show her how to load and unload a pistol.

"First, you press the button on the side here, and your magazine falls out. Now you take the required ammunition, in this case, the Beretta takes 9mm," Jake explained as he had her follow him toward a picnic table.

"You put them in one at a time like this," He told her as he placed each bullet into the magazine. "Then, insert the mag back inside the grip here, and you should hear a click. That's how you know it's locked in. Then place your hand on the top part of the pistol like this," Jake then put the palm of his hand on the top of the pistol. "Take it and slide it back, then you'll have a round in the chamber," He instructed.

To Lindsay, this was a rollercoaster of instructions. She was quite confused and secretly hoped he would not quiz her on it later.

"Wow, that is a lot to remember," She told him with a chuckle.

"It's not that complex, I promise," Jake said as he laughed a bit, with his deep voice.

Jake handed the firearm back to her, and immediately after she grabbed it, he forgot one instruction.

"Oh, one more thing, probably the most important. Whenever you're not intending on firing that weapon, make sure the safety is on," Jake told her bluntly.

"Yes, absolutely. Thank you," Lindsay replied and understood why his comment was curt.

"Just take good care of it, it may save your life," Jake said.

"Wait, I didn't ask for the gun...I just wanted to shoot one," She replied.

"No, please. Keep it. We all must be armed. I trust you," Jake told her with a small smile.

"Wow, well… Thank you again," Lindsay said.

"If you ever have any questions or need anything - just give me a shout," Jake said to her, making her feel a tad safer.

His hospitality warmed Lindsay, and they sat there in silence for a second. It was interrupted when Jess came out limping and shouting.

"Hey! Hey! Those things are here!" Jess yelled to warn them.

"Whoa! What?!" Jake turned and asked her.

"The DEAD! They're coming to the house!" Jess shouted as her voice carried through the whole backfield.

Jake quickly grabbed his Mossberg off the table and grabbed Lindsay's hand, too. They ran to the back door and into the house while Jess limped in behind them. Jake marched
